Dear Timeline Auctions: maybe consider changing up who makes the stuff you sell as priceless antiquities? If I can identify the same sculptor I get just a wee bit suspicious.
They're currently auctioning this "Medusa," which seems to bear striking stylistic similarities to this "Amazon" they sold in 2017 ( https://www.barnebys.com/auctions/lot/roman-cavalry-mater-castrorum-sports-mask-of-an-amazon-warrior-obnmmjhgzb2).
The "Amazon," by the way, seems to have been a knock-off of the Crosby Garrett Helmet ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crosby_Garrett_Helmet), which - come on. You can do better than that.
Yet more perfectly preserved "Roman" wooden tablets with the types of text not found on wood! Cool cool cool. (Thread on some prior sales: https://twitter.com/artcrimeprof/status/1319315796657655808?s=20)
Did they raid my nana's costume jewelry box?
Nice beginner's forgery project here. "If an entire statue is too intimidating, start with just a shoulder!"
Now watching the promo view of this... thing while singing "If I were a rich man..."
Sorry - "If I were a substantial Median or Elamite bronze bowl mount..."
Does a Sasanian document in Kharosthi script make sense, friends?
OMG, they're trying to sell yet another hideous "Roman" mask?!?
This is so painful.
Rouge's gallery.
Wait, they also nicked all the sculptures my nana made in her adult center art classes? Not cool, dudes!
A... "weight-shaped idol"?!? What is a weight shaped like? Is a ball an idol? Is a cylinder? Who would pay for undatable, unprovenanced lumps of stone? All unanswerable metaphysical questions.
me, a bi woman me, an ancient art historian
🤝
those are not Ancient Near Eastern boobs
Metropolitan Museum: "We're going to call this random stone lump we excavated a chess piece!"

Timeline Auctions: "Hold my beer."
So, I can't keep all the pieces for my kids' Candy Land game together for more than a week, and you're telling me you are selling three sets of gaming pieces from the 3rd-7th century CE in the same auction?!?
And that's a wrap for this auction. In conclusion, if you're thinking about dropping a bunch of money on an antiquity in an auction that's also selling souvenir moon rocks, maybe... don't?
