Come on QCs, catch up. We had a huge referendum in 2019 on whether Britain is a nation that tolerates vast amounts hilarious corruption, openly lying to the public, self-dealing by cliques of undeclared interests and absurd propaganda, and the answer was “Emphatically, yes”.
This is not An Accountability Moment. This is just Johnson’s accomplices - by which I mean most of the British press - exacting some limited revenge upon him and his colleagues for forcing them to debase themselves by repeating and endorsing his absurd horseshit.
Nobody is surprised to learn the Conservative Party is a sewer of corruption that sprays everything it touches with dark brown splashback. They all knew it was when they put them back in power and again, none of them would go back and change it, if they were given the chance.
The only thing that might have burst the tyres on this unholy cycle of partisan party political propaganda and silly bickering between the Conservative Party and the British press was part two of the Leveson Inquiry. And they all worked together to ensure that inquiry was killed.
The reason the papers feel safe to go after Johnson now is the opposition have repeatedly demonstrated they are utterly dickless and will never meaningfully stand up to any of these people. That’s what they meant by “real opposition”: MPs who could be trusted not to blow the gig.
We might say that nobody - not the Tories, the opposition or newspaper editors and owners - wanted to end up exactly where we are now, but we’d also acknowledge that they would all rather be here than in any possible alternative, and so they all worked hard to ensure we got here.
