I was hoping to feel energised after today‘s #criticalmassluxbourg. The experience was sobering. A few observations. @CyclistSiggy #pasunendroitdangereux.
When people weren’t ringing their bells, hundreds of cyclists made less noise than a single car. Awesome!
Cheerful cyclists showing that the city belongs to us, too. Even better!
So why is it disheartening? Even with a #criticalmass of cyclists, cars reign supreme in @CityLuxembourg. Police were quick to admonish that cyclists had to adhere to the code the la route. Fair enough.
But somehow @PoliceLux didn’t care about: car drivers constantly honking in annoyance. Pretty sure the code la route doesn’t allow that when there’s no imminent danger.
Even in km/h 30 zones in limpertsberg, very few cars in the oncoming lane chose to slow down. Most of them definitely going faster than 30. Cyclists be damned.
I‘m pretty sure that Luxembourg‘s code de la route stipulates too that you’re not supposed to drive into a crossroads that is obviously blocked.
Or these friends here: trying to overtake in a km/h 30 zone. Oncoming traffic and all. Who had to give way? The cyclists.
And finally, my favourite: the running-red-squeezing-into-blocked-crossroads-squeezing-into-traffic move. So glad that @PoliceLux concentrated on bikes adhering to the #codedelaroute today.
By the way, those pictures are exemplary. There were dozens of similar situations. So many honking cars. Everybody busy they were suddenly going as slowly as those bikes, constantly red traffic lights and all.
Yes, suddenly being faced with hundreds of unfamiliar road users can make you panic a little bit. But hey, driver, now you see how it feels! And you’re still the one sitting in a potentially deadly machine. You don’t get excuses for panicking and charging on.
And please, show me a demonstration, registered or not, where participants are forced to stop at each traffic light. Cars reign supreme in @CityLuxembourg and this won’t change soon. When the roles are reversed for even a minute, everybody‘s flipping out. The end. @CyclistSiggy
