From Outro back to Blue Side:
looking at growth along the blue

Let’s go back to March 2018, to the release of Hope World and within it the track Blue Side (Outro). Following airplane, this mellow Outro takes us into j-hope’s “blue vibe” - blue skies and a nostalgia in the wind.

Looking at the lyrics of this brief piece we see the wistful thinking, a desire to return to the past, when things were nice and comfortable blue. Listening to this song itself we hear “back to blue side” more prominently over the former lyrics “in my blue dream” giving it

that dreamlike, nostalgic quality. J-hope sings “in my blue dream” combined with the lines “I will put you” and “I will hold you” of wrapping himself in this comfortable blue dream “even if you say no” which demonstrates putting up a front - deep down, the desire, as

repeatedly stated, is to go “back to blue side”. This fading line then closes the song and mixtape before three years pass and we come to the full Blue Side (2021)

A demonstration of j-hope’s growth and maturity as a musician, and celebrating three years with Hope World, this gift draws us deeper into that warm blue dream.

we open with j-hope showing us the passing of seasons “spring, summer, fall, and winter” and despite the change, the “same feeling, Blue” remains. The desire to return to the days where one was young and naive persists but this time it is a more raw and apparent whereas in

the outro it was more assumed. We visit the core of the song - back to blue side - and transition into the dream where before it was just naive nostalgia, this time we’ve grown into nostalgia accompanied by a reflection.

In this middle section of nostalgia and reflection, we see j-hope acknowledging that even though he wishes to return to blissful blue days, with the sun, and the wind and the blue moon, it was to escape pain in the darkness, to escape fear.

He sings and he can escape to his room to live in this blue dream. But the transformation is shown in that he knows he can’t just dwell in the past of blue dream. He knows that instead of struggling between calmness in passion, he’d rather find a resolution burnt in blue.

Note that he went from the sun/clouds/moon, crossed the rainbow bridge, walked along the blue path, to get to the resolution of burning in blue. “Burnt in blue” is reflective of the blue flame, which emotionally could be reflective of moving past a naive

nostalgia and coming to an acceptance and willingness to feel and express emotion with an cool intensity. Whether it be anger, whether it be love, it is growing to accept the past and look on it with a smile so that we can come to the present and look forward

to a resolute end.
We end with familiar lines from the outro - now a promise that even though he has grown past the naive nostalgia, he can still find comfort held in his blue dream whenever he returns back to blue side.

Blue side as an Outro gave us a taste of nostalgia and bloomed into the full Blue Side(2021) reflecting on the past to bring us to look forward and eventually burn in blue.
