JSHK color study: my personal analysis thread
It all began with a video review about the Jibaku Shonen Hanako-Kun manga I saw on YT
In the video, she was noting and giving praise of how the anime was able to maintain its visual distinctiveness to the manga...

But what makes the series remain cohesive when the series is adapted to a different media?
One of the things I noticed is how the series has a distinct choice of color palette, which heavily leans to warm color tones, both the lights, shadows, and the extra color accents...

To prove this statement, I decided to be a mad lad and digitally color picked as many colors as I can see in all the 12 manga covers, including some of the official arts that have different color nuances that are not present in all the 12 covers
And after I did my analysis...
And after I did my analysis...
I can confirm that all the colors in their color spectrums wheels lean Very heavily to warm color tones, both the lights and shadows
You can see there are a LOT of reds and oranges tones in every color chosen, the blacks, the whites, and even the blues...

A lot of orange and red, and any warm color, in general, are present too in the supposedly cool-toned manga pages, usually used in the lightning or as the accent color to add that extra oomph to the piece...
From all the references I've gathered, here are the compilations of the color picks that my eye can catch. Boy, that's sure plenty of colors, isn't it!
(P.S: Handpicked these, I've reached the conclusion that I've seen enough variations of vermilion and oranges for a lifetime)

I also found some interesting tidbits about these color choices that the artist made, and here are some cool things that I noticed:

(continued below)
The black colors used on the series falls into shades of burgundy and maroons, which are prominently present in Hanako and Tsukasa's hair and outfit color, and other dark-colored objects
In some cases, the blacks also fall in the spectrums of dark purples
In some cases, the blacks also fall in the spectrums of dark purples
Interestingly, this also stays faithful in the anime, which sticks to a more limited range of colors to maintain production costs. You can see that the burgundy and maroons are still there, and aubergines are especially visible in Tsukasa's bottom
The white colors present in Nene' uniform are mostly leaning in cream as a base color which still has some sort of either yellow or orangish tones in it
The same applies to the skins, which as you guessed it, often use tangerines as a shade color, bronze, and even pure orange

I've also noticed the frequency of green-blues colors asides from all the reds and orange I've mentioned
In some pieces, turquoise, aqua, and aquamarines are used as a shadow color or color accent
Heck, Nene herself has seafoam green hair tips

I guess the reason that these colors are often present in their piece is just that they just like green blues so much, and I wholeheartedly agree that turquoise is a beautiful color
I think I myself have also gained an appreciation for the beauty of teals

The pinks that are frequently seen in Mitsuba's color scheme falls into peachy pinks (see the left side of the first pic), with purplish-pink as his usual choice of shade colors
Interestingly, instead of using the cool pinks in pink color spectrums, the cool pinks are commonly used by the artist as a highlight for the purple colors, which is generally seen in Akane's color scheme
And as you guessed it, we can see plenty of greens used leaning to yellow-greens, such as olives and chartreuse, and the yellows fall into shades of gold, as you can see in Kou's hair color
These colors often overlap in their usage in this case

An intriguing case in the 12th cover of the manga, which chose teal as the shade color, making this particular piece's tone unusually cooler than the rest
I never thought that teal and pastel lemon could go together and look fine tbh

Still about volume 12th, again we see pastel yellow, teal, and cerulean as an extra addition to this colored page
Almost no strong shade of red is present as it usually is, probably for setting the mood for the big reveal in this volume

Here's also one of the most fascinating color choices of the manga chapters, choosing to depict space environment with the everpresent vermillion, warm pinks, with aqua shadow color as an artistic choice
And my most favorite piece of all of the pieces I've studied is this one!
We see a lot of stargazing scenes depicted mainly in blue and yellow color scheme, but moonlight shadows depicted in warm oranges? I don't see many artists going in this direction, and it looks brilliant!

Aaand here's my simplified color palette of all of those jshk artworks I've observed
To conclude this thread, I think that I've come across an interesting case your choices of colors palettes shape your personal style, and I've certainly learned a lot from this study case :D
