Today for @ESPNFC, I’m at what could be the Bundesliga title clincher - Mainz v Bayern. Here’s a pretty shot of the stadium to get you in the mood.
When you go to do your Corona test in Mainz, you pass by @AwayDayJoe_’s Lego masterpiece.
Just in: Robert Lewandowski starts for Bayern. Five goals needed to equal Gerd Müller’s legendary 40 goal mark set in 1972. Leon Goretzka also back in the starting lineup. https://twitter.com/fcbayern/status/1385906453655998467
Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting back on the bench for Bayern but the ex-Mainz forward taking a few minutes to say hello to some of the Mainz back room staff and there’s a hug for Stefan Bell too.
Off we go in Mainz. Bayern win = they’re champions. Live on @ESPN
Hold the phone! Mainz lead against Bayern (again). They went two nil up and lost 5-2 at the Allianz Arena. Jonny Burkardt gives them the lead with help from a Manuel Neuer howler! 1-0 3’
Lewandowski with his first big chance. One-on-one. Skies it. Choupo-Moting would have scored... 15’
Mainz are playing really well. Could be two nil up here. Already hit the post twice.

Thomas Müller meanwhile could be heard arguing with the linesman over an offside. “I wasn’t going for it. *waggles finger* it doesn’t say that in the rule book.” Linesman laughs 18’ 1-0 #M05FCB
2-0 MAINZ! This might be the best performance I’ve seen against Bayern this season. Robin Quaison doubles their lead. Bayern have looked really poor but that’s to Mainz’s credit. (Remember though...Mainz went 2-0 up v Bayern and lost 5-2.)
Mainz 2-0 Bayern HT. As complete a performance as you will see against Bayern. Out performed them in every single area. Robert Lewandowski’s only shot looked like it was from a guy who’s been out injured for the best part of a month.

No win for Bayern today = no title today.
Manuel Neuer’s mistake for the first Mainz goal shows you how he didn’t play cricket when he was younger.

If he had, he’d know that you can’t do a long barrier without getting your body behind your arms. Looks like he’s playing volleyball. *sigh*
Hansi Flick not messing about. Triple substitution for Bayern. Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, Tanguy Nianzou and Jamal Musiala ON. Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman off. Off we go in the 2nd half. #M05FCB 46’ 2-0
Robert Lewandowski’s just elbowed Mainz’s Leandro Barreiro. A lot of blood. With a different ref, think Lewandowski could have seen at least a yellow card. 56’ #M05FCB 2-0
Robert Lewandowski is then elbowed by Jeremiah St Juste. Yellow card. 🤷‍♂️60’
Still waiting for Bayern to turn up. Been really flat today.
And still... Mainz have played this out superbly. Bayern toothless for the entirety. Look very tired.
Breaking: Manuel Neuer has just taken a throw in. You know something’s up.
LEWANDOWSKI SCORES! With 20 seconds left to go. But Bayern still lose! 2–1 to Mainz it finishes. No title today for Bayern.
