RANT:
I know that they do alot of good, and Marcus Rashford has been instrumental in changing policy which is has changed the lives of many I work with. But I worry that celebrities 'teaching' people to cook a meal for £1 a portion is a mis-step. Here's why:
This feels like painting the toenails on a gangrenous foot. The problem is food poverty, inequality, low wages, lack of childcare options, the hostile environment.
Can we please move our efforts upstream to make sure we all have enough to eat rather than less.
Tom Kerridge said on the TV 'Some families only have a single ring and a kettle to use, so here is a recipe that allows for that.'
This is true - a recipe is not the answer.
WHY do some families only have a single ring and kettle. Can we stick with that for a second....
For supermarkets who minimise their tax bill or do not pay @LivingWageUK to put these recipes out is a kick in the teeth. At worst, are ensuring with their low wages that their own employees struggle to afford food, then telling them they just don't know how to cook.
Imagine I break your legs. Then I give you a leaflet about crutches, and look I made a video of me, with my two unbroken legs, demonstrating use of crutches ooh it's fun isn't it!
But, wait, you might say, is nobody talking about how I broke your legs!?
Most worrying thing: These recipes bolster the false narrative that poverty is the problem of those who experience it and their responsibility to solve.
NO! It is structural - caused by the actions of those who make policy, and those who make money from perpetuating inequality.
I am not talking here about the work of @BootstrapCook because what she does grew out of her own need to get by, and is based on a deep solidarity not 'hey if you have a problem maybe if a millionaire puts their mind to it for a few minutes they can help you solve it'.
Thank you for listening. Sorry to rant. Solidarity not charity. @NewhamSFund
