I will start off by highlighting the different elements when it comes to singing. All these elements are part of the reason why Jungkook is such a versatile singer. After that I will highlight the different musical genres he adapts to.
So before we get into the different genres, let’s take a look at Jungkook’s voice in At My Worst. He has a sweet, light tenor voice that is relaxing and honey-like. Even Hoseok mentioned that Jungkook can make anyone feel relaxed by his singing.
Despite Jungkook’s own voice quality. He also knows how to morph his voice to make it fit a different song. Take one brief look at his Dynamite intro where he completely changed his technique to match the mood of the song. https://twitter.com/jeonfolders/status/1299198913539264512
Further on, into the layers of Jungkook’s voice let’s take a look at his lower register. Over the years he has improved his lower register to the point where it sounds much more developed than before.
Not only that, but especially in the last two years Jungkook’s speaking voice is leaning a little towards a baritone, an aspect we don’t hear often since his singing voice is ofcourse a tenor.
We also have Jungkook’s higher register in which he has showed a wide variety when it comes to highnotes. He is capable of belting, and hitting highnotes with head voice and falsetto.
His falsetto in Make It Right that got him many praises for how clear and beautiful it sounded.
Jungkook’s powerful highnote in On, to which he used his head voice.
(For anyone that doesn’t know the difference between falsetto and head voice. Falsetto tends to sound more breathy, whereas head voice has a fuller, more powerful sound).

Jungkook’s belting, using his chest voice. Just look at how effortless he performs it and how healthy it sounds.
Because Jungkook has amazing pitch and many layers to his voice, it helps him with creating harmonies and backing vocals for BTS songs. To name one of the countless examples, listen to his layered harmonies here.

Furthermore Jungkook’s amazing vocal agility and control to perform all these vocal runs and riffs.
Jungkook’s ability to perform vocal trills. Which is basically when a singer is alternating quickly between two notes. It’s a difficult skill that not every singer can master.
Jungkook’s vibrato. The technique he uses to implement vibrato is healthy and balanced. He isn’t forcing it at all as it comes out naturally.
Last but not least we have Jungkook’s ability to even rap, with his incredible sense of rhythm. There are more layers to Jungkook’s voice and abilities, but that wouldn’t fit into this thread.
Because of Jungkook’s great understanding of music and ear for different styles and techniques he is able to adapt to different moods and colours. Jungkook doesn’t cram his voice into a song but rather paints a song with it.
To be versatile singer a good technique is required. If a singer doesn’t have a good technique it will be unlikely for them to branch out into more genres.
There are a lot of points, but the most important is to have good breath and vocal control. On top of that a good understanding of placements and different vocal styles and techniques is required. Now let’s dive deep into all the genres Jungkook sings.
Let’s start off with the famous pop. For pop singers there is less vibrato. The focus is more so on tone and pitch. Singers in pop songs sometimes add breath which is something Jungkook is exceptionally good at.
As was mentioned earlier the way Jungkook did the Dynamite intro for the original was more of a punchier way of singing. Whereas Jungkook in the Slow Jam remix sounds more soft and breathy. He morphs his voice according to the mood of a song.
Next up we have Jazz, for this genre at times a bright sound, minimal vibrato that isn’t overpowering is required. Just listen to the way Jungkook makes his voice sound in Still With You.
Another example of Jazz would have to be Jungkook in House of Cards. Here he used the vocal style ‘scat’, which is basically singing nonsense doo-woo kinds of syllables.
In classical singing there needs to be more vibrato. Placement, sound and vibrato control is important. Jungkook even uses Chiaroscuro technique in these clips. He is basically creating a sound in the voice that is simultaneous light and dark.
Then we have R&B. This genre requires a singer to have a very agile technique. A singer needs to be capable of performing lots of runs and riffs, while also paying importance to the beat and rhythm.
In the early days BTS music contained a lot of Hip Hop elements. Jungkook around this time either rapped in the songs, or he sang along to the beat in a different manner than what we are used today. Just listen to Come Back Home.
Not only Come Back Home, in the song We On. We also get to hear such a quality from Jungkook’s voice and he even harmonises with the rap. Jungkook has had a huge understanding in music from a young age. Proving his versatility to this day.
We also have EDM to which Stay and Euphoria both fit in that genre. For EDM usually higher pitched vocals are sought after since it matches with those type of songs. Often times in EDM vocals get pitched up digitally but in both cases of Stay and Euphoria that wasn’t needed.
Then we have the rock genre. In general rock singing brings out a lot of power and strength. For this type of singing chest voice has to be strong. If we listen to BTS’ Coca Cola ad you can hear the power from Jungkook’s voice.
Not only the Coca Cola ad, we also heard Jungkook’s powerful voice come out when he posted his Dis-ease bridge. The belting, mixed head voice absolutely sound powerful and strong.
Lastly for ballads. An emotional voice and sustained notes with vibrato are important. Jungkook has often been praised by music critics for his ability to convey emotions so it is to no surprise that he fits ballads as well.
To conclude this all, for a singer to improve one’s versatile it requires you to listen and study to different singers and musical genres. Once you explore more, you will be able to incorporate it all in your own unique singing style.
Jungkook is a very versatile singer. He has often expressed that he loves to learn new techniques and take inspiration from many singers, like when he went to the Ariana Grande concert.
His voice has a lot of dimension and he shows to have great knowledge when it comes to performing different techniques for different musical genres. Which is the reason why he is able to pull of this many genres without sounding out of place.
It’s one of the reasons why I respect him as a singer, but also am looking forward to his future projects in which he will probably showcase and explore many genres once again.
