The chaotic “Union Unit” was effectively replaced as a political power by the creation of a special cabinet committee.

The aide chosen to help out on the “Scotland strategy” was none other than Carrie Symond’s “party pal” - Henry Newman. The only non govt minister (or even MP) involved with the Union committee.
So Johnson looks like losing a 3rd leading Union head inside 2 months.

Henry Newman - little known outside London - is widely known in media circles as an indiscreet source of gossip, thought to have been the source of a number of leaks that Cummings railed against.
However he’s considered untouchable due to he’s status as Carrie’s best friend.

This may explain why Johnson took the highly problematic & unusual action to personally ring round newspaper editors to brief on the Cummings allegations - he’s protecting his fiancé’s best friend..& the last man standing in his Union Unit - just days before the
elections.

Perhaps not also coincidental to Johnson’s calculations is Newman was very close to Michael Gove.
It wouldn’t be a good time to lose Newman’s support when he - more than anyone else - thru his friendship with Carrie knows rather more than the average SPAD does about Johnson.
