teen wolf really copy and pasted my babysitter’s a vampire’s homework when it comes to some things. it’s like same characters, different font.

benny weir and stiles stilinski are similar in so many ways when it comes to personality. they have the same sense of humor, both care deeply about their supernatural friends, and they both feel inferior to the rest of their friend group because they can’t do what others can.

erica jones was a strong female character who started out as being a nerd turned super-hot-vampire, and ended up being a beautifully crafted conflicted character who struggles with where to draw the metaphorical moral line.

she cares about her friends, but she doesn’t want to be associated or seen with some of them at first, caring more about the reputation she never had before she became a vampire. as the series goes on, she realizes her own self worth and doesn’t care as much about her image.

erica reyes is a carbon copy of erica jones, however she’s not nearly as well developed. in comparison to mbav, teen wolf doesn’t offer too much insight into erica’s motives. she has epilepsy and seems to be viewed as a nerd, but people seem to like her.

she has no clear motive for being a jerk. her epilepsy is portrayed as a physical challenge, but it doesn’t seem to make her peers treat her all that differently. when she turns into a werewolf, she becomes a completely different person personality wise for seemingly no reason.

not only does she have no motive, but she isn’t given enough screen time for her character to fully develop before she gets brutally murdered. her arc is left unfinished, and she isn’t mentioned too much after that either.

it’s a real shame that they didn’t develop her character more, as i actually really liked where her character was headed. i don’t really understand why they made her so heartless in the beginning, but she was becoming a very powerful character as the season went on.

i don’t hate erica reyes, i just wish they treated her better, because she could’ve been a really fantastic character, like erica jones eventually became.

with the ericas, i feel like there are almost too many similarities for it to be a coincidence, but i don’t want to accuse mtv of stealing from a niche canadian kids show.

still, i feel like i need to substantiate my arguments with an actual comparison to fonts.

benny weir is like roboto and stiles is like roboto but in bold. i can’t really explain why i think this except for the fact that stiles can swear and somehow be more openly not straight™, therefore he is bold.

erica jones is reminds me of lobster two because i feel like that’s what her handwriting would look like and also i feel like it suits who she is, a bold character with soft edges. erica reyes is like the font autumn chant; an attempt at emulating that same vibe, but hard to read

anyways it’s really late at night i’m very passionate about these shows. i love them both, but since i started watching teen wolf a month ago, this has been sitting in the back of my mind, and i’ve only expanded on it as i get through the seasons.
