Will Durant is perhaps the only Western scholar-historian-commentator who spoke with blunt candour against the naked evil of European colonialism in India.

He gave a blow-by-blow account of almost every excruciating detail of the most evil Empire the world has ever seen.
The Western world still hasn't forgiven Will Durant for this trespass.

But it is one thing for Indians to write about the horrors of British colonialism because they are the actual sufferers and victims.
It is another for someone like Will Durant to do so because he was an insider of the culture that spawned colonialism.

The writer visited India and was 'horrified' to see people starving to death. He was shocked to find a people suffering in poverty and oppression.
India has been 'bleed to death' by England, he writes. He says: 'I propose to show that England has year by year been bleeding India to the point of death' The author says one must 'speak out and take sides before the fight is over'
India is three times as many people as in the United States, and one-fifth of the world's population.

It has produced saints from Aurbindo to Ramakrishna, from the Vedas to Upnishad.
It ranks with the highest civilizations of history.
The British conquest of India was the invasion and destruction of a high civilisation by a trading company, careless of art and greedy of gain.
When the British came, India was politically weak, and economically prosperous.
The Company paid such fabulous dividends that its stock rose to $32,000 a share. Its agents deposed and set up Hindu rulers according to bribes refused or received. They forged documents as circumstances required, and hanged Hindus for forging documents.
