It was A Tomco (Tata Oil Mills) brand those days. It was named 501 because Tomco chief Jal Naoroji, a nationalist, felt it could do one better than a soap called ‘500’ which existed abroad. The soap was also priced right for the masses at Rs.10/100cakes. 2/4
Later the levers brand wanted to kill the Indian brand & priced their brand below cost which was Rs.6/100 cakes. Jal naoroji didnt bother & waited but in just 3months, the lever company raised their price as they could no longer continue selling below cost. 3/4
During early 1990s Tata& #39;s wanted to move out of businesses that did not meet their long term strategy and TOMCO was sold to their competitors Hindustan Lever Limited
501 later became a part of Hindustan Unilever’s Rin sub-brand 4/4
