#MicahNotes (4/23)

• Jacob deGrom earned a career high 15 strikeouts tonight en route to his first complete game shutout since August 18th, 2018

The best pitcher in baseball has an otherworldly 74:7 K:BB over his last 41.0 IP dating back to 2020

He’s simply incredible
• Willson Contreras now has 6 HRs on the season over 60 ABs

He hit 7 HRs over 189 ABs in 2020

Contreras has always had great quality of contact skills, so this HR pace isn’t surprising

He’s on pace for his 1st 30-HR season & remains a top-5 fantasy C
• JT Brubaker threw 7.0 IP for the 1st time in his career tonight

Over his last 2 starts (13.0 IP) he has a 13:0 K:BB

Brubaker has a deep arsenal (SL, 4SFB, SI, CU, CH) that he can command well

He’s throwing his best pitch the most (SL) & the early results are promising
• Randy Arozarena is hitting .292 over 72 ABs with 3 HR & a SB

He has a 25:4 K:BB, so he’s still striking out too much

More than that, he had just a 66.3% Z-Contact & 62.1% Contact coming into tonight’s game

He has fun tools, but can he keep his BA solid over a full season?
• Andrew Heaney had his best start of the season tonight:

6.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 10 K

His 4SFB was dominant, as it induced 10 whiffs on 30 swings

He earned a 37% CSW & continues to improve after a rough 1st start of the season

He has a 25:5 K:BB over his last 3 starts (17.2 IP)
• The Franimal is now on a 5-game hitting streak (7/20)

He’s hitting .270 with 4 HR over 63 ABs

His quality of contact remains elite & a .270/30 finish seems likely at this point

• Alex Verdugo is batting .316 over 76 ABs

He’s well on his way to a career best season
• Yusei Kikuchi has now allowed 10 ER over his last 11.2 IP

He has an unimpressive 4:6 K:BB over this time span

His control appeared shaky in this one, which led to a lot of hard contact

Control has been an issue for Kikuchi, so this isn’t a promising stretch of starts
• Anthony Rizzo is 12/31 (.387) over his last 9 games

He’s hitting just .246 but he had a .229 BABIP coming into today’s game, so I expect that BA to improve some

He’s ultimately a more valuable asset in OBP leagues

He’ll be around .270(.370 OBP) 25/7 by seasons-end
• Steven Matz has yet to allow more than 3 ER in any start this season (4 starts, 23.1 IP)

He earned an impressive 38% CSW tonight as he was living in the zone in this one, demonstrating pinpoint control & command

At this point, he shouldn’t be a FA in your league
• Casey Mize has allowed 11 ER over his last 9.2 IP

He continues to have trouble commanding his pitches, which leads to a lot of missed spots & a lot of hard contact

Mize only has 49.0 career MLB IP, so he’s still rather raw
• Jake Diekman earned his 2nd save in as many opportunities tonight

It appears Diekman is the guy in that pen, go add him if you need saves

• Nick Solak already has 5 HR & 2 SB with a .274 BA over 73 ABs

At this rate, he’s challenging .270/20/20
• Carson Kelly now has 5 HR over his last 8 games

Pick him up

• Taylor Rogers earned his 1st save of the season tonight

Alex Colomé has struggled this season & that has opened up the door for Rogers

This could be a committee going forward, but Rogers is worth an add
• As expected, Rafael Dolis got the save opportunity tonight with Romano & Merryweather still out & he got the job done

Romano is on track to be activated tomorrow, so Dolis’ role as the closer could be short-lived

• Cavan Biggio is 3/26 over his last 8 games

No bueno
• Nico Hoerner had 3 hits tonight (two 2B) in his 1st start of the season

Each of his hits had an EV > 103.3 mph

He doesn’t have much natural pop, but he’s capable of challenging ~10 HR given his strong contact skills

He’ll be a solid source of BA & SB this season
• Austin Riley has now homered in 2 straight games & is 6/11 over his last 4 games

He’s hitting .255 over 55 ABs to start the season & should continue to be rostered everywhere given his HR upside
• Huascar Ynoa bounced back nicely tonight:

6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Due to his continued 4SFB/SL approach, he’ll likely continue to mix good starts with bad starts as the season progresses, but he’s worthy of a roster spot

He also hit a 110.3 mph 1B & 102.2 mph 2B 🔥
• Kyle Hendricks has allowed 7 HR this season over 19.0 IP

He allowed 10 HR over 81.1 IP in 2020

He never had a HR/9 > 1.11 in any season of his career, so this is an interesting development

His 4SFBv is down a bit this season, which could explain why he’s more HR prone
• Dylan Cease couldn’t make it out of the 4th today:

3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

Through 4 starts (17.1 IP), he’s yet to make it out of his final inning in any of the starts (4.2 IP, 4.2, 4.2, 3.1)

Shaky control continues to hurt the young SP
