Gonna do a thread on movies I watch through CUFF I think?
1. Golden Arm: Like if they remade Karate Kid with the cast of a Comedy Bang Bang episode. Betsy Sodaro is so funny. 5 stars I’m all in.
2. Feeling Sexual (short): By far the most awkward sex scene I’ve ever watched, so congratulations on that. I laughed, I cringed, 5 stars.
3. Fully Realized Humans: Can see why Feeling Sexual was picked as the preceding short. I love the chemistry between the leads. It’s fantastic. Cute little animations for transitions are great too. 5 stars.
4. God Lady: Some nice rural Alberta horror. Good atmosphere, some fun effects, kids are always reliably scary. This actually happened to a friend of mine, 5 stars.
5. Bloodthirsty: Loved the lead performance and the music. Big fan of werewolf movies, and this is a fantastic addiction. Interesting in the wake of something like Framing Britney as well. Love a Michael Ironside cameo, 5 stars.
6. Do You See What I See (short): David Dees Nuts! Strange camera work, strange guy. Sad and odd doc short about a man who seemingly believed every possible conspiracy theory. So long! 5 stars.
7. Joe Buffalo (short): Beautiful, sad, but hopeful. Joe is incredibly effective (and affective) narrating his own story of residential school trauma, skateboarding, and sobriety. Absolutely recommend this one. 5 stars.
8. It’s Rocket Science (short): A very nice little story! My teacher brain focuses entirely on him failing school because of his dyslexia. Students learn differently! 5 stars.
9. Revelations (short): We love a unique animation style, especially in a documentary. Don’t dump people when they’re on acid. 5 stars.
10. The Maroon Bomber (short): Like The Fast & The Furious, this film about a vehicle is actually about family. “I don’t like the truck nuts,” 5 stars.
11. RKLSS (short): Is this a documentary? It’s rad as hell. Similar to Joe Buffalo, but done through some wild animation. 5 stars.
12. Supermalo (short): Have no idea how to feel about this one, honestly. 5 stars?
13. Spooky Town (short): What is this? I did a drive thru “haunted house” thing last year too and it was about as good as this one. 5 stars.
14. The Ranch (short): An exploration of gendered expressions of frustration through the imagery of shooting cancer off his mom’s “prostate” 5 stars.
15. Another Man’s Treasure (short): A Calgary legend! Dan the One Man Band of course gets 5 stars.
16. Poor Glenna (short): Fun throwback b-horror. Like if Little Shop of Horrors and The Deadly Spawn had a baby, and the baby played video games. 5 stars.
17. Lucky Feet (short): Kinda gross, but funny. Is this for foot guys? 5 stars.
18. Bubble (short): A horror short for people with misophonia. Never thought watching someone eat leafy greens could make me so uncomfortable. Like the Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill with an extra twist? 5 stars.
19. Peter the Penguin (short): Amazing that something this horrific can be funny. Quite an achievement. One of the weirder body horror shorts I’ve seen. 5 stars.
20. Stuck (short): Does this count as a revenge horror? Prevenge, is that a thing? Hits an unexpected level of violence, but it’s all in one direction. Kinda satisfying. 5 stars.
21. With Pleasure (short): Huh?? 5 stars. #cuff21
22. Feed Your Muse (short): Just like the song Cecilia, if Cecilia were a horrifying monster who caused sleep paralysis. Big fan of this one. Sleep paralysis isn’t used enough in movies. It’s scary as hell to experience. 5 stars. #cuff21
23. Coming Home in the Dark: A brutally tense movie. They establish almost immediately that anything could happen, and as we learn about the villains we only worry more about how far they’ll go. Those villains are also more interesting than you’d expect from this genre. 5 stars.
24. Meat Lovers (short): Good joke, and sometimes that’s all you need! 5 stars.
25. Peaking (short): Fun idea. Good amount of tension. Not a lot of payoff. 5 stars.
26. The Curse (short): Another short built on one good joke. I like it! 5 stars.
27. Together Together: WHAT A NICE MOVIE! 5 STARS! #cuff21
28. Shine (short): This has me really excited for Frank & Zed because this is precisely the kind of thing I want from #cuff21. 5 stars.
29. Frank & Zed: A medieval monster horror gorefest done with puppets? That’s everything fun about an underground film fest in one. This one’s gonna stick with me. It’s about friendship! 5 stars.
30. Itchy Fingers: He’s da Jokah, baby. Great lead performance, and I liked the writing for the most part. Hard to play a character who’s simultaneously irritating and sympathetic. This also made me want to watch Barry. 5 stars.
31. Riders of Justice: When does Mads Mikkelsen let you down? He’s great, but the supporting cast provides a combination of humor and pathos that really elevates this movie. It’s a revenge movie with something to say beyond “revenge is bad.” 5 stars.
32. No One Will Know (short): A good example of a premise that works well for a short. We get some fun fight choreography, some drama, and a sad ending. All you need. 5 stars.
33. First Date: Solid comedy. The quirky supporting cast brings a lot of life to this one, especially as the story sort of requires a subdued performance from the lead. Everyone’s turned to 11, and it’s fun. 5 stars.
34. Censor: The real horror here is having to hear Maggie Thatcher on the telly. I think it’s an interesting movie about the psychology of horror (or maybe extreme) filmmaking. This will probably take me time to unpack. I liked it, though. Love the retro look. 5 stars.
35. Trashed (short): Enjoyable little short. I’m losing steam on this thread. Oh well. 5 stars.
