Rewatching #Bridgerton and I'm noticing something really sad: the way Violet treats Anthony. Yeah, he's screwing up. Nobody is denying that. But, the man became the head of the family at EIGHTEEN. Even back then he was still pretty much a kid. 1/13
An 18yo kid, suddenly responsible for his mother and seven younger siblings. He's the only father Gregory remembers, or Hyacinth has ever KNOWN. That's before adding all the responsibilities that come with his title. 2/13
He wasn't given the opportunity to grow up at a normal pace, or figure out who he is. He had responsibilities. HUGE responsibilities. Responsibilities that most of his peers couldn't have begun to understand, yet. 3/13
Today, he would be in serious therapy just from that. Now add in how close he and Edmund were and the fact that he had all of that heaped onto his shoulders while he was in MOURNING. 4/13
And that's not even getting into everything Edmund's death did to him. That's not getting into his belief that he's going to die young. Seriously, if therapists were a thing back then, his could make a damn good living on him alone. 5/13
It's honestly no wonder he rebelled the only way he was allowed to. Refusing to marry, and intending to let Benedict eventually deal with the title and everything that came with it when he was gone. His mistresses were the only part of his life he had any real control over. 6/13
Now, coming back to Violet and the way she treats him in season 1 of the show. Yes, Anthony has done some stupid shit. He's screwed up. But, Violet acts like he IS a screw-up. There's a difference. 7/13
There is a definite feeling of him being "the unfavorite." The one who is incapable of doing anything right. With no acknowledgement that he's TRYING, has BEEN trying - since he was EIGHTEEN. 8/13
She is so determined that Daphne be allowed to marry for love, to the point of being disappointed when she thinks that Daphne is engaged to a PRINCE, because she knows that her daughter is in love with Simon. 9/13
But, when it comes to Anthony? She doesn't seem to give a shit WHO he marries, or if he'll actually be happy, as long as he marries SOMEONE with the proper breeding. 10/13
No concern about a love match for Anthony. Just one more duty piled onto the shoulders of a man who has had far too many duties piled on him for far too long, already. 11/13
It's like she doesn't even try to see him as a person, or even as her son. Even to his own mother, he is reduced to being just the Viscount. And it is so damn sad. Anyway... rewatching after reading TVWLM made me just want to smack Violet around a bit. 12/13
Okay, this became a rather long rant. Chalk it up to me kind of identifying with Anthony in some ways. (Not something I care to get into on Twitter, LOL) 13/13
