It really bothers me how much people criticize Andy's friends in the Devil Wears Prada instead of realizing that while they went about it wrong, they were trying to protect her from an abusive workplace that was isolating her from friends and family and controlling what she ate.
And the "takeaway" from the movie is if you completely overhaul your identity in service to your abusive boss and somehow manage to escape intact, your boss will write you a glowing letter to help you further yourself in the career you wanted before the abuse.
Andy's friends (and her boyfriend) were the same age as she was and didn't really have the language or the context to be graceful about things.

What's portrayed in the film as "holding her back" is really trying to keep her intact.

And it's gross to compare the actions
Of people in their early 20s to the levels of abuse that Miranda doled out and Nigel normalized. The whole take away of that movie is gross and reinforces the worst cultural norms in media.
Yes, I'm complaining about a 15 year old movie, what of it?
