This is getting out of hand, and honestly shame on danganronpawiki for fear mongering and posting a translation of a business tweet meant for the Japanese market without some very important context. (1/9) https://twitter.com/WeebyNewz/status/1385724830717157380
First things first, there's nothing new here. Spike Chunsoft Japan had clear written guidelines for not posting videos past chapter 1 of DR games since the very first game, 11 years ago. There was a clear bright message on the official website of all games saying that. (2/9)
(Coincidentally, those warnings were often in the form of Monokuma warning LPers they're going to be punished if they disobeyed) (3/9)
There are cultural differences here as well. Japanese copyright law is not the same as the US one, and is clearer on the illegality of LP videos where permission has been explicitly taken away. In the US this isn't as clear-cut and haven't really been tested in court yet. (4/9)
But even without the law, Japanese communities tend to be more obedient to corporate demands. Go ahead and search - there are virtually no Japanese LP videos of *any* DR games past chapter 1. No one even attempts to test enforcement. (5/9)
What changed? Streaming became a legitimate business prospect in Japan, much like it has in the US. Stricter copyright law made Japanese game companies publish more structured explicit guidelines instead of notices on individual game websites that were sometimes vague. (6/9)
In practice, nothing did change. Japanese people still don't stream or make videos past episode 1 of DR games. Spike Chunsoft updated their Japanese website meant for Japanese audiences, in Japanese, and made no announcements in English whatsoever. (7/9)
I think by now, after a few backlash cases, most Japanese companies learned that these kind of requests have less public acceptance (and also legal grounding) in the US. Spike Chunsoft never even attempted to, despite having Japan restrictions on most games they publish. (8/9)
Seriously though, don't translate a Japanese business tweet and add a scary "we don't know what that means for western players" to it if you're not familiar with the context. For the most part - yes, we do. (9/9)
