One of the root causes for the fact that so many people in this country believe things that are not true might be related to two facts:

Donald Trump is a confirmed liar. And a lot of people trust him and believe everything that he says.

A couple of quick examples:
Today is the one year anniversary of the day Former President Trump suggested that ingesting cleaning products might be a way to get rid of COVID-19.
And right now, polls show that white men and women without college degrees as well as men in general trust Trump for MEDICAL ADVICE more than they trust Biden.

White men without degrees trust Trump for MEDICAL ADVICE a net 33 points more than Biden.

For white women without degrees, it's not nearly as dramatic. They only trust Trump a net 2 points more than Biden.

For men in general, it's a net 1 point of more trust of Trump on medical
(For what it's worth, white men with degrees, women in general, white women with degrees, blacks and latinos all trust Biden more than Trump on medical advice).

But a year after Trump suggested cleaning products might cure COVID, many people trust him more for MEDICAL ADVICE!
Republicans who relied on Trump for their information were more likely to believe that the COVID crisis was overblown (66% to 53% in November, right before the deaths spiked to an all-time level in the US) compared to Republicans who didn't.
More significantly, Republicans who relied on Trump for their election information were much more likely to say that voter fraud was a major problem than Republicans who didn't (61% to 36%).
Republicans who relied on Trump for their information were more likely to say that not enough attention had been paid to claims of voter fraud than Republicans who didn't (73% to 55%).
