Continuing tonight at Cinéma du Grand Acquittement, the Roy Scheider Film Festival, a tribute to one of my favorite actors. Tonight: John Frankenheimer's 1986's adaptation of Elmore Leornard's novel 52 Pickup. Roy teams w/ Ann-Margret again in a movie that screams "don't cheat."
This movie is one of my favorite RS flicks mostly because it contains so many great performances. @RealJohnGlover (of Smallville) puts on a clinic on "how to play snarky evil" and is just amazing to watch. He should have gotten an Oscar nom for this. Robert Trebor is also great
in a brief but memorable performance as the sleazy Leo Franks. Somewhere in the multi-verse, Robert Trebor got all the Joe Pesci parts and half of the Wallace Shawn (inconceivable!) roles and is a household name.
Ann-Margret stands by her man but on her own terms and is always a treat on screen. The marital tension between her and Scheider is really amazing to see. Great performances all around!
Elmore Leonard wrote the novel and also the screenplay adaptation as he did for many movies like Get Shorty, 3:10 to Yuma (both versions), and most episodes of Justified (bulk of the series, dude) which was based on his series of Raylan Givens novels and stories.
So if you dig Leonard, Ann-Margret, Roy Scheider or all of the above, this flick is in your wheel house! So let's get started. As Alan Raimy says, "Oh, I've got something to show you. Something that is gonna knock...you...out!

52 Pick Up. Roll 'em!
RS was 56 when filming began but he's in great shape in swim trunks in the opening scene showing offnhis signature tan. Ann-Margret looks at him with pure love...little does she know.
The paramour/grifter in this movie is Cini, played by Kelly Preston who was only 23 at the time.
8 minutes in and there's a gun to Roy's head.
JAGUAR XKE
@RealJohnGlover is absolutely KILLING it.
A lot of time spent showing how Roy's company fuses metal together.
Ann-Margret making a political speech complete with environmental commentary.
Roy all hang-dog after getting called to pay the piper for his depravity with a woman half his age. Now, rather than cough up $105,000 he chooses to tell his wife. Ann is handling it better than expected but you can feel the explosion coming...
Topless hot tub party is de rigueur for 1980's bad guys. Plenty of coke to go around!
Clarence Williams III, Lincoln Hayes from the Mod Squad is on the scene looking cool as hell and being menacing af.
Lol @ "Bag Your Ass!"
HA!!!
Shit about to get dark af.
Alan Raimy narrating the murder of Cini is just fucking diabolical.
Harry laying it out for Barbara, explaining this horrifying predicament in their saccharin sweet bedroom complete with a doll house(??) is a nice contrast.
Vanity, Laura Charles from The Last Dragon showing off her own version of The Glow in a nudy booth for Roy.
This neo-noir low level underworld gumshoe thing is classic Elmore Leonard and I am here for it.
Oh man. Love this so much.
RS to Raimy: "Something about your face makes me want to slap the shit out of it."
Look at the rich textures in this seedy set. No less than 5 lava lamps! Leonard had a way of showing the disdain for the trappings of counter culture held by characters in his work.
Holy shit, that scene was tense af. Vanity was lucky to live through it.
This movie might be the high-water mark for home Jaguar maintenance.
I knew it was coming but Bobby Shy jumping out of that closet still made me yell loud enoung to wake up the cat!
Harry and Barbara in mortal combat emerge victorious against Bobby Shy! Now comes the double dealing that Elmore Leonard is known for!
Roy looking at CW3 like a shark with an air tank in it's mouth.
"If a man pulls shit on me, he is either very brave or very stoned. Which are you?" --Bobby Shy

God damn man.
