Not going to lie. The slur “rice eater” in the opening of Shadow & Bone is really bothering me.
Yeah, so let’s talk about how Alina isn’t accepted or welcomed in Ravka because her mom was Shu Han, and later a white kid calls her rice eater. This happens within the first 8 mins of episode 1. That’s not okay.
Yeah, and that poster in the background with a caricature of an angry Asian face isn’t okay either.
Okay, so it was a choice to make Alina half Asian in the TV show to address the shortcomings of the source material being “too white,” but by doing so, they’re incorporating a lot of anti Asian behavior into the plot.
As someone who is half Asian and deals with racism in the real world because of it, it’s so nice to see it’s exactly the same in a fantasy world that was “fixed” to be more inclusive.

I made it through ep 1 and it’s left me feeling upset, and ep 2 opens with the slur “mutt.”
Again, this show wanted to be inclusive by diversifying its cast since the source material was too white, but it’s the mixed race Asian character and her origins that’s an issue???

The brothel is decked out in Asian decor. Don’t even get me started on that.
Episode 3 starts with someone saying “let’s start by making her eyes less Shu” aka “less Asian.”
