How do we understand things? How can we achieve goals? The neocortex is not like a computer - it learns a model of the world. You experience a model of the world you've recreated in your head.
Jeff talks about his experience meeting Vernon Mountcastle and how Mountcastle's discoveries have influenced Numenta's work. Mountcastle proposes that we have approximately 150,000 columns in our neocortex - and they all perform the same intrinsic function.
When you touch a coffee cup, your brain is learning models based on various sensory inputs - how it feels, what it looks like, the sound it makes when you place it on the table etc. The Thousand Brains Theory states that all knowledge is distributed within thousands of models.
Today's AI systems require huge training power. @SubutaiAhmad explains sparsity and how it can make AI systems more robust. Most of the neurons in our brains are silent, only a tiny fraction is being used. Imagine all the energy we will save if we apply sparsity to AI!
Thought about uploading your brain to a computer so you can digest all of the internet's content in a nanosecond? Jeff thinks it's not impossible but we are still far from that technology-wise.
"What makes us unique is not our biological presence. What makes us unique is that we are the first species that understands the broader universe." - Jeff Hawkins

There are lots of life forms in our world but our intelligence makes us one of a kind!
Numenta's roadmap to machine intelligence:
When it comes to knowledge we can’t directly observe (i.e. when we learn through language), we can take a set of facts and arrange them in different reference frames - which might lead to different beliefs.
How do you know what the next note is when you're singing your favorite song? 🎶 The neurons in our brains are constantly processing contexts. They represent where you are in the song, and also the "history" of the song up to the point for you to make the correct prediction.
