I’m just gonna say it, some people would rather believe and say they have ADHD than that they’re what they actually are, which is on the spectrum or autistic, because society has taught us you can have ADHD and still be “normal” but if you’re autistic you’re “doomed.”
I’ve met so many people whose traits, behaviors, and needs match up completely with other ASD folks and yet they’d rather die than ever be autistic because of both the narrative we’ve painted about autistic people as well as the systemic violence autistic people face.
I’m grateful for people who haven’t internalized that being autistic means being less than. I’m not angry with people who can’t stand the idea they might be autistic, internalized ableism is unfortunately very common, but it does make me sad and baffled to see.
when I was growing up, my parents did everything they could not to call me autistic — namely calling me “very special” and an indigo child. my aunt had a negative perception of what it means to be autistic until we talked about how I am. it’s upsetting and I want to change it.
diagnosis and the psychiatric industry are rooted in white supremacy so I won’t base my opinions about what “diagnoses” should be clustered together but as far as I’m concerned, having ADHD is very much a part of the spectrum and many autistic people agree.
it was so autistic of me to think that no one would care about or read this thread lmaoooo
