Friday reflections and thoughts-
I am always reflecting on rules & precedence- who are they for and who do they serve? Rules should be published up front and not presented in the moment of decision-making. And please- set precedence in a way that it serves families and community
I have a wonderful collaborative group of colleagues across the province. We chat about inequities we face regularly, rules we come across and how sometimes those rules are in direct conflict with precedence being set by an individual who was permitted exemption from said rule.
Some boards value the individual leading the work for transformational change & set precedence with keeping their leader in a role they thrive in. Others are following a handbook that we aren't privy to and let's be honest- it's oppressive.
Although school experiences can leverage the learning for those in leadership, it can also clip the wings of strong leaders if their frameworks don't align with the team they are placed with. If systems are interested in transformational change, put racialized leaders together!
Because the alternative is- you are going to lose your racialized leaders. They are going to seek educational experiences that feed their soul not oppress them. And they will build an exit plan. Wonder how your board is doing with diversifying your staff?
Pull some data. Here are some thoughts-
1)What percentage of your staff is racialized?
2)What percentage of your racialized staff has left? (resigned, leave, seconded, etc)
3)Does the percentage of your exiting racial staff outnumber the percentage of new hires of racial staff?
Retention is what you should be looking at. Not just hires. If you are not retaining your racialized staff then you need to develop an action plan with them to keep them. That is what leadership is. Protecting your staff- all of your staff.
We are in a time where we NEED transformational change and we NEED transformational leaders. I am begging leaders in this province- set precedence where it matters!! Put folks into positions of leadership because they earned and have proven their skills by moving the system.
And don't make the "safe choice". Things need to be shaken up to better serve our communities and families. And maybe we can start setting precedence where it serves our communities. #antiracistEd #ethicalleadership #precedenceisabarrier #EquityEd
