We’ve had nearly twice as many enquires for an appointment this week than any other week in the 10 years we’ve been in business. Last year as a sport, returning from lockdown was new to us. This time it’s not. It is different though
Never before have GAA players gone this long without games/training. In some cases it’s been 7 months. Last year it was just over 3. In non Covid off seasons players would have played basketball, soccer, rugby to keep themselves fit and to socialise.
It also maintained tissue capacity. This time round, even with the best gym programs and running programs, nothing can prepare for the decelerations, landings and contact like the sport itself. The tissue capacity and general movement skills aren’t there
It will take weeks to build that up. We’ve seen some clubs experience >10 injuries in a week. As a coach, however easy you think you’re taking it, go easier. If you’re planning 3 days a week, consider 2. If you’re thinking about friendlies already, you’re mad.
Most injuries will be minor soft tissue injures but I’ve already seen one (contact induced) life changing knee injury this week, more non-contact ones will undoubtedly follow over the coming weeks. Take time, allow the players to remaster the basic skills and their own movement
Allow them to rebuild that tissue capacity that been lost since Sept/Oct and if you’re a coach and your team are suffering an excessive number of injuries please look closer to home before having a go at a physio clinic receptionist because there’s a 3 week waiting list.
All sports, all codes, all age groups are back at the same time, all with the same poor tolerance to load. Your local physio clinic just won’t be able to cope with the demand. I’ve spoken to 2 other clinics today with similar scare stories. Ease off, break them in. Take your time
