#COVID19 vaccines have been the light at the end of the tunnel throughout the pandemic. And now we're seeing more evidence about how bright that light is. #VaccinesWork

Both the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines appear to provide strong protection for at least six months after vaccination in healthy adults. Some data from a study of the Moderna vaccine here: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2103916
Promising preliminary evidence that both of the mRNA vaccines protect against the B.1526 variant. While not yet peer reviewed, and need to be validated clinically, these studies add to growing understanding of just how effective vaccines may be. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.02.14.431043v3
We continue to keep a close eye on scientific updates to understand how the existing vaccines work, especially as variants become more prevalent as time goes by. More info from studies of vaccine efficacy in children and of booster shots are expected over the next several months.
In a study of health care workers in England, risk of infection dropped 85% (95% CI 73 to 92%) by 7 days after the second dose.

Real-world evidence from Israel (a case-control study published in @BMJ_Latest) found that the Pfizer vaccine was as effective in their rollout as was shown in the clinical trials: Two doses of the vaccine dropped symptomatic cases by 94%. https://www.bmj.com/content/372/bmj.n567
A recent @CDCMMWR study looked at the vaccine rollout across 8 U.S. locations and the effectiveness among essential and frontline workers. In real-world conditions, the rates of infection dropped by 90% among fully vaccinated workers. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7013e3.htm
Closer to home, NYC is also starting to see the tangible effects of our vaccine rollout. COVID-19 hospitalizations among older adults have dropped by 51% since mid-January. https://gothamist.com/news/covid-hospitalizations-cut-half-among-older-new-yorkers-thanks-vaccines
In other populations, an early analysis from @CDCgov found no evidence that the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines pose serious risks during pregnancy. However, we do know that #COVID19 poses serious risks for pregnant people. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2104983
. @CDCgov is keeping a close eye on breakthrough cases nationally, where someone fully vaccinated is infected w/COVID-19. Right now, the number of breakthrough infections represents a very small proportion of the 75 million people who have been vaccinated.

Importantly, among breakthrough cases seen so far, there is additional evidence that vaccination protects against severe disease and hospitalization. These data are some of the best evidence we have that the COVID-19 vaccines are remarkably effective.
The bottom line is that #VaccinesWork
