Lockdowns are nothing but a circuit breaker. The scientific community are in consensus that the economic & social cost of lockdowns is not worth the benefit. This debate is not either lockdowns or vaccines, or nothing. What about mitigation strategies, ie following SOPs? https://twitter.com/GeoReportCard/status/1385613274520162306
Data from 40 countries has shown that closing educational institutions, limiting gatherings to 10 people or less, & closing face-to-face businesses with high exposure levels each reduce transmission. The science is clear: by using effective interventions (ie following SOPs) -
lower income countries could control the pandemic while avoiding unnecessary nationwide lockdown. The whole world has moved on from this debate, why are we wasting our breath? New research suggest that focusing on reducing capacity at infection hot spots while keeping less risky-
parts of the economy open, can stop exponential rise in cases while minimizing harm to economy. This strategy, which was always the idea behind Pakistan's smart lockdown approach, is now being implemented in MANY countries, inducing US.

The main purpose of lockdown is that it-
Pushes peak into the future, buying time for govt & healthcare system to prepare. If such a lockdown is needed, govt should impose it. But before that, shouldn't we at least try & educate masses to strictly adhere to the SOPs already in place? https://twitter.com/OfficialNcoc/status/1385655026912305158?s=19
Scientifically lockdowns have limited or unclear role in reducing overall scale of pandemic. But its economic & social impact is disproportionately high. Which is why scientists & experts dont recommend blanket lockdown! Why would political analysts be recommending such a policy?
Just to add: closing educational institutions, limiting gatherings to 10 people, & closing face-to-face businesses have more impact on reducing the epidemic as compared to strict lockdown!
