Might get some hate for this but the whole “100 corporations produce 71% of all waste” is kinda weird to me bc who do we think theyre producing that waste for? The people buying their products. I get that they could produce more efficiently, but there’s no incentive... (1/x)
... when people are still consuming their products and there is no real pressure to change.
And yes the military is a large contributor to this waste, which is in a way a whole ‘nother problem, but to say “how about we go after the companies instead of the people using straws, water bottles, etc.” isnt the woke viewpoint a lot of people seem to think it is.
Like, it can be both. But also, the notion that environmental reform and restrictions are gonna come from the top down is just silly imo. Too much $ and private interest mixed in w the state (not just in the US); and it’s not like we as people can push...
... companies toward environmental consciousness and sustainability bc THAT IS LITERALLY NOT IN THEIR NATURE. If it’s not profitable overall, THEY WILL NOT CHANGE; no matter how many customers they lose.
Hate (love) to say it but again we arrive at anticapitalist politics/action and revolution as the best method for reducing waste and working toward sustainability. In the meantime tho, i think placing the onus wholly on corporations is silly and counterproductive.
I would also like the add that i can absolutely do a better job at working toward sustainability in my own life. Even a bit before the pandemic hit i noticed myself consuming more and producing more waste for a variety or reasons and i would personally like to do...
...a much better job at reducing my carbon footprint. It can be hard to hold ourselves accountable when working toward environmental sustainability, especially considering the nature of the society in which we live, but to place ALL the blame on corporations for...
... operating in a manner that society deems “acceptable” and “normal” is foolish. They are selfish and profit driven at every turn because we as a society allow, and even encourage it.
This is not to say that these corporations are not at fault, they absolutely are, but we find ourselves in a symbiotic relationship that harms the earth. They provide us with a multitude of modern (many wasteful) conveniences, while we provide them...
... profits, labor, and most importantly: consent. Where is the state in all of this? Theyre there to make sure it’s all running smoothly for the capitalist at the top. (END)
This thread got kinda long and involved a lot of concepts, but i would like to finish by saying we should grow our immediate communities first and foremost through mutual aid and growing our own food (as a community). I dont do nearly as much real world activism...
... as i would like, and im working hard to change that. But talking about these problems openly, honestly, and with purpose (i.e invalidating propaganda pushed out by immensely rich companies and people) is a big step in achieving our goals of environmental sustainability.
