CDC #ACIP begins with a presentation from Michael B. Streiff from Hopkins. Was missing last time around. A clear explanation of how particular this syndrome -- clots w/ low platelets -- is and how it may happen.

In normal circumstances, a syndrome like this is extraordinarily rare. "I’ve just never seen it," Streiff says.

Treatment? A non-heparin anticoagulant and IVIG.
Data on the $PFE $MRNA vaccines (cases of CVST not linked to low thrombosis.)
All 15 post-marketing cases for $JNJ vaccine were in women. Reporting rate of 7 per million, or ~1 in 150,000.

TS: "That does not mean there is no risk in males. There could be cases we did not identify in the database."
What happens if you split women who received the $JNJ vaccine into finer age groups. Highest reporting rate in women 30-39.

Is this biology, chance, or the impact of who got this vaccine?
The number of clots here means that some of these people had more than one. Emphasizes how scary it is to have platelets clump like this.
CDC seems to have settled on TTS as the acronym for this vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia.

Comments from Melinda Wharton (CDC) and Doran Fink (FDA) defending decision to pause. Wharton says that the pause allowed physicians to be informed about this rare (and unusual) side effect, and allowed the procurement of data to enable today's conversation.
$JNJ brings out big guns from presentation. Head of R&D Mathai Mammen, chief medical officer Joanne Waldstreicher.

Mammen argues vaccine has unique benefits for global vaccination. One dose, equal protection against variants of concern.
Mammen argues $JNJ vaccine generates T-cell immunity in addition to antibodies, which may help against variants.

"We believe the excellent efficacy we nevertheless maintain is due to the T-cell immunity," he said.
