For those who like to call European countries (and a few others around the world) “socialist”:
Socialism is a system in which ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, capital and land, is by the community as a whole, through central government.
European countries, Canada, and others are not socialist states, since the government (on behalf of the people) doesn’t own and control the means of production. Instead, it is a capitalist social democracy. Social democracies support government intervention in society to improve
the welfare of citizens. So, they have free school education and subsidised higher education as well as taxpayer funded health and welfare systems. So they’re about as socialist as any other non-socialist country.
