đŸ§”The most common theological misunderstandings I encounter in my teaching:

Jesus died to make God the Father love you.

A: Salvation is the work of the Triune God. Jesus died b/c God loves you. Love is the reason for, not the consequence of, Christ’s death. 1/
The Trinity was broken on the Cross, the Son eternally, ontologically separated from the Father.

A: The Father gave up the Son to death on our behalf & the Son suffered really & truly. But broken Trinity is a theological impossibility. 2/
During his earthly ministry, Christ’s human nature did human things (eating, sleeping, becoming tired) while his divine nature did divine things (healing, raising the dead).

A: Christ was one person, a hypostatic union of human & divine. He always acts as one person. 3/
When Christ ascended to the right hand of the Father, he became fully divine & no longer human.

A: The Incarnation did not cease with the Ascension. Fully God & fully human, he ever lives to make intercession for us. 4/
The Gospel is primarily about getting individual people out of hell & into heaven.

A: The Gospel is the power of God thru which the exalted Christ, on the basis of his death, resurrection, & ascension, restores all of life to be subject to his authority & word. 5/
Sanctification is about learning to rely less & less on God’s grace as you become more “naturally” holy.

A: Growth in holiness is more & more trust in God’s grace, more & more reliance on the Holy Spirit, not less. 6/
Our future state is essentially a disembodied worship service in the sky.

A: Our future state is bodily resurrection & new creation. 7/
The dispensational end times timeline of rapture, great tribulation, Armageddon, etc, is core doctrine & the historic teaching of the church.

A: This is a relatively recent interpretation & by no means the historic teaching of the church. And definitely not core doctrine. 8/
The Catholic Church teaches the sacraments are works people perform in order to earn salvation.

A: The Catholic Church teaches the sacraments are gifts of God’s grace people receive thru the Church. Their origin is Christ. Their end is salvation. But they are not works. 9/

Oops, one more:

Either bodies are bad, wicked, sinful, & we must be eager to get rid of them...

Or bodies are temples we cultivate b/c we’ll get heavenly rewards for how well we “take care” of them.

A: Bodies are good gifts of grace. Bodily life isn’t a competition.
