I am so very tired of this debate and people just acting like they don't know the actual problem or how to fix it. Pete isn't serious about tax reform because his (and the GOP donor class) income/wealth is not tied to his property. If we did some actual tax reform, taxes on Pete and his friends would go up. So, they have no serious interest in changing it.

For the average Nebraskan, your property is a large % of your total net worth, and may or may not have much relation to your income, which is what you pay your taxes with. For Pete, it's the opposite, so he pays a MUCH smaller % of his income to NE taxes than the average person.

Let's say you a have a 250k house and make 100k a year. Your property taxes are 5k, so you're paying 5%. For Pete, he makes probably 2.5M a year and has a 1M house, which is 20k in taxes, but only .8% of his income. If Pete paid the same %, he would owe another 100k in taxes

We could fix the problem tomorrow if we really wanted to. But the guys in charge aren't really interested because they know the solution requires them to pay their fair share, which they have no intention of doing.
