The enthusiasm of Dr. Maitry Talavia (intern, of the left in the pic) and Jay Rana(final year MBBS student, on the right) who were posted with me in one of the COVID wards today deserves a thread. 1/n
At a time when the healthcare system is facing a severe shortage of staff, interns and even final year MBBS students are being pushed into battlefield and rather than being afraid of the task they are excited. 2/n
Their levels of empathy, curiosity and compassion made me recall my days as a medical undergraduate student. Today, while I was managing the more serious patients, these two wonderful people ensured that none of the patients were left hungry. 3/n
Many a times patients who are on oxygen mask become breathless while eating and tend to avoid it. This can further delay their recovery process. These two guys decided to use nasal prongs for the patients who were on NRBM and face mask for the time the patients were eating. 4/n
They even helped them feed and constantly kept monitoring their saturation while the patients were eating and immediately putting on the mask if the saturation dropped below a certain level. 5/n
Having these young and budding doctors like Maitry and Jay around filled me with renewed vigour and empathy which can many a times take a hit after working tirelessly for such a long time under extremely stressful conditions. 6/n
While resident doctors are sweating it out there we have been only delighted by the helpful hand of interns and MBBS students and also the dedicated nursing and physiotherapy students who have recently been assigned the duties. 7/n
I just hope our government offers them enough respect, rest and remuneration to not let this precious resource become hopeless and indignant. Save the young doctors! Offer them hope and dignity! @narendramodi Sir 8/8
