Covering Europe’s key inland waterways

Did you know MarineTraffic also covers the European Union’s inland waterways, which span over 37,000km, crossing through 20 member states and connecting hundreds of cities.
Rivers such as the Rhine are a vital part of the supply chain, as goods are transported from key seaports, like Antwerp and Rotterdam, into the hinterland. There are currently over 1,000 vessels travelling on the Rhine.
The majority of those vessels travelling on the Rhine, which include cargo, tankers and passenger ships, are sailing under the German flag.
The German port of Duisburg, which receives over 1500 port calls a week, is the top reported destination on the Rhine.
To travel from Antwerp in Belgium, to Duisburg, a ship can take up to 1 day to make up the distance of 131NM. Take for example the Karbouw, which recently made the trip as you can see in this playback video.
