Really thrilled that my neighbour has chosen this time, during a really interesting discussion on prostheses and technology, to decide to continue the NOISY work in his garden #NNMHR2021
All joking aside, this morning’s panel on Technologies and Prostheses was a joy! Really interesting themes of society, stigma, media portrayals, the lived experience and “inspiration porn” were brought out in the papers. #NNMHR2021
The discussion on amputees portrayed in the media vs the reality of being an amputee for the majority of the population was really vital - e.g. beautiful, young, aesthetically-pleasing prostheses vs ageing, ill, vulnerable. #NNMHR2021
The reality of amputation is often made invisible: the stump with its scars, pains, etc is missing from media portrayals, as is the distress of losing a limb. Also the problems with fitting and wearing prostheses. #NNMHR2021
I also loved hearing @georgialhaire discussing their research on artificial teeth and oral health, and how this widens the definition of prostheses away from the usual artificial limbs. The denture care manuals and advertisements were incredible sources! #NNMHR2021
There was also interesting discussion around the difficulties of using false teeth and how it would take patience, determination and practice to get used to them (there was a lovely wee comparison to the difficulties of using an artificial leg here, too) #NNMHR2021
Well, this panel from the team at @itdfproject is definitely giving me A LOT of new reading material! #NNMHR2021
Ah, it’s so great to hear more about the Hands of X project, which I saw the display of when it was at @VADundee! #NNMHR2021 https://twitter.com/loubell/status/1156274000898809856
What a session that was on the Ethics of Sensitive Sources! I’ve taken a wealth of notes, and don’t think I could do them justice on here. But this theme of access to archives (in all forms) has been such an important thread to this whole conference #NNMHR2021
