Today is St George’s Day, patron saint of England.

I’m not into Christian Saints, being a rabbi and all, but I am proud of my country.

George is an apocryphal saint. He’s allegedly buried in Lod (Lydda) Israel; his tomb in Orthodox church adjoining a mosque & synagogue.

Patron saint of England, Ethiopia, Georgia & Malta,
he appears to have been the don of Greek Christian parents - if he ever existed. Apparently his father was martyred.

George was decapitated allegedly in the persecutions of Diocletian (C4th), but the stories are garbled.

This diversity and confusion of story and affiliation is most appropriate for England.

Our country’s history is mixed up with Europe, Africa, India, Asia and the Americas. We are a very diverse nation.

With our proud history we can all hold fast to our #FaithInOurCountry.
