I’m gonna take Roger Dad
Down to the camp to enlist,
This boy of seventeen
Adventure was his wish.
He wanted to join the Light Horse
The government paid thirty pound,
For a horse of great heart
And a temperament that’s sound.
They made me ride him bareback
My legs wrapped around his girth,
Jumping log made obstacles
To test our strength and worth.
They issued me a uniform
Including my slouch hat green,
They branded Roger with an arrow
And now we are a team.
They made me ride him bareback
My legs wrapped around his girth,
Jumping log made obstacles
To test our strength and worth.
They issued me a uniform
Including my slouch hat green,
They branded Roger with an arrow
And now we are a team.
Each morning I groomed my horse
And trained with all the lads,
To become an expert horseman
Along with my fellow comrades.
We sailed on the ocean
My head was full of wonder,
Ignoring the ominous signs
Of lighting and of thunder.
Of all the mates I made
Only one I could rely,
And trained with all the lads,
To become an expert horseman
Along with my fellow comrades.
We sailed on the ocean
My head was full of wonder,
Ignoring the ominous signs
Of lighting and of thunder.
Of all the mates I made
Only one I could rely,
This loyal, dependable creature
Our bond I can’t deny.
The battle is a blur
The stench of death around,
The carnage and the suffering
Dead bodies on the ground.
That innocent boy I’ve left behind
A man is how I stand,
The reality of War
Blood bleached grains of sand.
Our bond I can’t deny.
The battle is a blur
The stench of death around,
The carnage and the suffering
Dead bodies on the ground.
That innocent boy I’ve left behind
A man is how I stand,
The reality of War
Blood bleached grains of sand.
That last line of battle
I carried the hopes of home,
The bullet hit my Roger
His life it was on loan.
He dropped beneath my body
And wrestled with a might,
I pulled that trigger to end his pain
And now he rests in night.
As I sit back in Australia
Memories haunt my dreams,
I carried the hopes of home,
The bullet hit my Roger
His life it was on loan.
He dropped beneath my body
And wrestled with a might,
I pulled that trigger to end his pain
And now he rests in night.
As I sit back in Australia
Memories haunt my dreams,
How the reality of my adventure
Was far from what it seemed.
We returned home as heroes
I was one of the lucky ones,
My only hero was my horse
Who didn’t escape the guns.
My cherished, brave Roger
You gave your life for me,
All of your equine friends
Suffered miserably.
Was far from what it seemed.
We returned home as heroes
I was one of the lucky ones,
My only hero was my horse
Who didn’t escape the guns.
My cherished, brave Roger
You gave your life for me,
All of your equine friends
Suffered miserably.
I salute you my best friend
You put your faith in man,
Loyal till the very end
I’ll see you once again.
Wait for me at heaven’s gate
You will remember me,
We’ll ride the clouds together
And celebrate victory.
You put your faith in man,
Loyal till the very end
I’ll see you once again.
Wait for me at heaven’s gate
You will remember me,
We’ll ride the clouds together
And celebrate victory.
