1. In speaking to some of India's foremost military aviators, I have learned the following - the transport of liquid oxygen by air is dangerous under any circumstances.
2. Hypothetically speaking, aircraft would need to be specifically modified and the liquid oxygen tank will need to be connected to special vents to purge excess O2 which frequently leaks from these tanks.
3. The IAF has attempted to work on a solution for this in the past but there have been serious constraints in operationalising this.
4. There are massive safety concerns on the carriage of liquid oxygen tanks in the event that a transport aircraft loses cabin pressure in the event of an emergency. To say a liquid oxygen tank is a fire hazard would be putting it very mildly.
5. Was told that flying a military transport at low altitude to counter a potential depressurisation scenario would be an impractical solution given the distances involved.
6. I have little doubt that IAF experts would be looking at all possible ways to try and see if the transport of large liquid oxygen tankers is at all feasible. At the moment, No but do watch this space in case there are any updates.
