a thread on why the events of today’s stream are inappropriate.
id like to start off by saying i know you meant no harm to the author or the community and you just wanted a funny stream. you tried to put a disclaimer at the beginning which i appreciate 1/9
however, intent doesn’t equate to consequences. you reading fics on stream was going to equate to hate no matter what you said. when you laugh at something, people laugh with you. when you expose something to a huge audience it will get hate. if you wanted to read fic on 2/9
stream you should have checked with the authors first and made sure it didn’t break their boundaries. writers put so much work and heart and soul into their fics. it doesn’t matter if you think it’s low quality or dumb. it’s never ok to make fun of something someone put 3/9
time and effort into. another thing is that wattpad is populated by a lot of young writers who are just starting out. having their work laughed at in front of 100,000 people is so discouraging and can stop young people from writing forever. everyone has to start somewhere. 4/9
i’d also like to bring up the fact that if this was a visual art piece that wasn’t considered ‘good’ or ‘high quality’ and you were shitting on it on stream their would be major backlash. because it’s never okay to make fun of visual artists regardless of their skill level. 5/9
i really wish you had kept the same attitude for fanfics. the double standard between visual art and writing is horrible, and making fun of writing on stream only brings us down more and makes it seem like doing that is ok. making fun of any art is never ok. writing is 6/9
incredibly stigmatized in the community and gets a bad rep for boundary breaking when in reality most of us hate writers who break boundaries more than regular ppl. laughing at fanfic on stream only encourages hate and the belief that fanfic is less than or other. 7/9
to conclude; reading fanfiction on stream without permission from the author first isn’t ok. making fun of fanfic or any kind of art on stream isn’t ok. if you want to interact with writers we would love that, as long as you did it in a positive way rather than negative. 8/9
please keep this in mind for the future. i love your content and i know you meant no harm but these were things that needed to be said. writers deserve better.
(sorry if this is poorly phrased im a little overwhelmed rn)
9/9
