It’s taken me a couple days to be able to say this (or anything for that matter): I feel relief over the Chauvin verdict, but find little solace in the trial. (A video & thread)
The verdict has quickly been overshadowed by the reminder that the system is and always will be designed to silence the voice of the Black and BIPOC communities.
I’ve been in such turmoil all week, as I know we all have, over this truth - feeling so heavy that most of the time I don’t know what to say and the only thing that comes out are tears.
Part of what weighs heavy on me is knowing that this man - this chauvinist - was escorted through the justice system safely and given his day in court.
But while he was shown fairness by the justice system, the truth is, it was his job to do the same and he flagrantly chose not to, instead choosing to exercise his ego in the killing of another human being. And this is our reality every single day.
Think about it - we see an uptick on reporting of police brutality only because there’s a national focus on it. But it’s always been there...it’s what the policing system has always been set up to do. So,think about how many incidences have never been reported.
So, I’ll close with just saying thank you - to the community organizers and activists, to the jury, to everyone who has taken a stand and raised their voice this past year, to those who have finally sat up and started paying attention.
The time is now. It’s the only moment we each have. So, what are you doing with your one moment to make a change?
