As my friend pointed out yesterday, when this shit of a movie was released, it created a controversy in the Philippines because it unfairly depicted what truly transpired in the 1520s. This “children’s movie” portrayed Filipinos
as the “enemy” and as savage islanders who have no sense of civility, both of which are FALSE. We as a nation will always take offence in the way our colonizers negatively portray us in their media because our people suffered under them and our pain was and is still real.
The Spanish colonial era in the Philippines is always gonna be one of the worst tragedies in our history because it marked the downfall of our nation. They occupied our lands, took our identity from us, mistreated, and even killed our people.
If a children’s movie already shits on us what makes you think the live action is gonna be any different? IT’S A BIG DEAL TO US FILIPINOS! Don’t you fucking dare tell us that it’s just a show or just fiction because it’s NOT. Shut your insensitive ass.
You don’t get to tell us what should or shouldn’t be offending us.

Another thing, when we (whose country was colonized by Spain) started raising our concern about the upcoming Elcano and Magellan show/movie yesterday,
and your first reaction was to defend the actor and not acknowledge the offensive undertones of the OBVIOUS plot, then you’re part of the problem. Alvaro playing a character in the show is NOT EVEN the issue, it was the concept of the show.
