Hey Spottie Hotties 🤪 let’s talk all about texture today! Aside from acne and hyperpigmentation, texture is one of the most common (and normal!) skin concerns we experience. https://twitter.com/topicals/status/1377288875257761792
How many of you experience texture concerns?
Texture is caused by a build up of dead skin cells accumulating within the pore. This can be a result of over exfoliation, under exfoliation, dehydration, a damaged/compromised barrier, excessive dryness, heat, and hormones. Texture cannot be extracted or popped.
If you’re dealing with texture that you’d like to treat, here’s a quick checklist for you to follow before deciding your treatment approach:

• Am I over exfoliating or under exfoliating?
• Is my barrier healthy?
• Am I experiencing any hormonal changes such as stress?
If you’re over exfoliating, the solution here to treating your texture is cutting back on exfoliation and increasing hydration in your routine. If you’re under exfoliating, add a day or two of exfoliation into your routine and also maintain the same level of hydration or more.
If your barrier is healthy, you have the green light to incorporate exfoliants such as azelaic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, Mandelic acid or glycolic acid to treat texture.

If you’re new to exfoliation, we recommend starting with gentle acids such as Azelaic or Mandelic.
And if you suspect your barrier may not be healthy enough to begin treating your texture with exfoliation, refer to this thread we did on how to identify and treat a compromised barrier: https://twitter.com/topicals/status/1319420173825286146
If you’re experiencing hormonal concerns, not much can be done topically to target the internal problem. But, you can still work to target the external concern by hydrating and exfoliating. It will likely take a bit longer to clear due to the hormonal aspect.
