The Federal gov has important functions, eg, protecting human rights, national defense, and international treaties. However, the Federal gov’s ability to effectively and efficiently develop and administer universal policies and procedures for the whole nation is limited. 2/5
Unfortunately there has been a relentless move towards greater centralization in the US. A Federal bureaucracy that attempts to directly manage a program over, say, both the rural plains of South Dakota and the city of Chicago often faces a task too complex to be manageable. 3/5
Management and decision making should devolve to the lowest practical level, and often that means letting each individual make his or her own decision. This means not only a better run society but a freer one as well. 4/5
This is localism, not libertarianism, because it accepts that centralizing is sometimes a good idea. It not only limits restrictions on one’s freedom and yields a more effective gov but also provides natural checks and balances on bureaucratic overreach. 5/5
