If your social circles play this game and you have visible success in status, career or wealth, you can compensate by publicly making yourself a hot mess, especially if you explictly link it to some socially or politically salient crisis
The incentives here are driving our young elites to present themselves in a state of constant breakdown, or near to it. It's amazing to watch
I don't think they're faking it, either. I think they'd genuinely be happier and more resilient if that didn't have a substantial social cost
