This #EarthDay , let’s not obsess over the potential of electric cars.

This #EarthDay , let’s focus on the potential of truly transforming our streets.

#NYC25x25
If our urban areas, where most trips are less than two miles, can make alternative modes of transportation like 🚶🚲 🚎 safe, convenient, and enjoyable, urban emissions will decline MUCH more than in a gridlocked city of electric cars.

In the words of @alroker and @BillNye on the @TODAYshow this #EarthDay :

"Cars are going electric, but bicycles are still the best way to get around." https://twitter.com/TODAYshow/status/1385213511933046784?s=20/video/1
Look outside & imagine each car is electric.

Cars would still dominate 75% of NYC street space.

Drivers would still contribute to traffic violence.

Buses, which low-income commuters especially rely upon, would still be in traffic.

We can't accept this future for our cities.
Cars (electric or not) are also LOUD.

"Most traffic noise—75 to 90 percent, according to California’s transportation department—is caused not by internal combustion engines but by tires rubbing against asphalt." https://slate.com/technology/2021/04/commutes-noise-pollution-cars-cities.html
We give so much of our precious urban space to private cars, and so little space to trees, gardens, parks, and playgrounds.

What's being prioritized in your city? Let's have that conversation this #EarthDay
