1) In 2014, the Clippers had to choose between keeping Jared Cunningham, a recent 1st round pick, and Joe Ingles. They kept Cunningham. He played 89 minutes for them before they dumped his salary in Jan. The next season, he played 44 more gms (9mpg), then was out of the league.
2) That same fall of 2014, the Jazz had to waive Carrick Felix with guaranteed $ in order to be able to claim Ingles (and one other player) off of waivers. Felix was an early 2nd rounder (33rd), but Utah chose to cut him and grab Ingles. Felix hasn't played in the league since.
3) The other player Utah claimed was Jordan Hamilton, and later that month they'd have to decide whether to keep Ingles or Hamilton. The latter was a recent 1st rounder (26th) and a 36% 3pt shooter with length and athleticism. They chose Joe. Hamilton played 25 more NBA games.
(Interesting side note: 14 of those 25 games Hamilton appeared in were with LAC, who signed him to a couple 10-days and then to a rest of season deal after Cunningham didn't work out for them.)
Anyway, this story features a 24th pick, a 26th pick, a 33rd pick, and an undrafted 27-year-old rookie. Guess which one is now an elite shooter and one of the game's best playmaking wings?

Making smart choices at the back of your roster can REALLY matter over time.
Each of these decisions came down to borderline 1st-rd talent vs. a 27yo who had been up-and-down overseas. Objectively, you wouldn't be wrong at the time to assume LAC chose correctly and Utah didn't.
Instead, it was one of the most important acquisitions the Jazz would make.
