I've been thinking about the future of George Floyd Square and imagining a city that actually is forced to physically reckon with the harm caused. I'm daydreaming all the possibilities of a pedestrian-only community hub connected to transit.
It's good, actually, for a city to have to change it's plans because it allowed a man to be murdered in front of a crowd (and the world). It's good to be physically confronted with the lasting impact. It might go a long way to community accountability.
Like, sorry about your plans for BRT, but you might have to change them and maybe if you were forced to make space for violence and harm done you wouldn't keep allowing people to be terrorized by your police. How can we link our reckoning to the physical geography of the place?
Imagine a pedestrian only place like Milwaukee Avenue that makes permanent all the beautiful things happening at 38th and Chicago. Imagine a permanent place for community to mourn and celebrate together. Imagine food, clothes, veggies, art, music, and connection.
Imagine if Minneapolis, a city that pretends to be progressive around issues of transit and liveability, *actually* centered that at 38th and Chicago. Instead of thinly veiled threats from the Mayor and the Chief of Police.
George Floyd Square showed us the future and we *can* choose to live in that future. We can choose to actualize and make permanent all the possibility that the folks at @GeorgeFloydSQ have managed to bring into fruition.
We should not be quick to "return to normal" in any sense of the world. We all lived through the last year and those of us that survived should get to keep the things we built that helped us survive. George Floyd Square is one of those things.
We could actually be the city we pretend we are if we make the right choice here. I feel sure of it.

And none of this mentions that there are people who have stated clear demands that need to be met before "returning" the space.
Maybe we should think less of "returning" 38th and Chicago and we should think more of *transforming* 38th and Chicago with the infrastructure needed to maintain this place. Maybe we should stretch our imaginations more than Frey and Rondo ever could.
I dunno y'all. Our city leaders show us all the time that they can't imagine true options for the people. But we actually DO have more choices here than we're being presented with. Abundance is a mindset as they say. I think we should choose abundance here.
Ultimately, I'm going to follow the lead of the keepers of GFS. When they want to fight, I'll fight with them. When they're tired of fighting, I'll certainly respect their need for rest.

But it would be a true shame for the city not to see what an opportunity there is here.
