1/2 Further to the topic of #Muslim- #Christian tombstones in BiH, here is another example preserved in a village near Sokolac. No name or date. The stela is over 3m tall, no footstone. It lies in a still active Muslim #cemetery & the style places it in the late 15th/early 16th c.
2/3 One side shows a cross, the other a crescent & small (pretty) bird. As the village lay within the land of the noble Pavlović family, it likely reflects a practice found in early Ottoman cadaster registers in #BiH (that include details of villages, household heads adult males
3/3 widows & religion), where 1 family member accepted Islam & others remained Christian. These would be 1st generation Muslims who weren't separated from the rest of the family in life & thus not in death. I ❤️ this tombstone & was thrilled to find it in situ after long search.
