Hey #StatenIsland, if you’re not paying attention to the race for borough president, you should. It’s the first time in recent history where the island’s Republican Party has formidable candidates running primaries against each other. 1/
Enter Steve Matteo, the mid island councilman and former chief of staff for current BP James Oddo. He’s running on his record of getting things done, with a focus on quality of life issues. 2/
Leticia Remauro is the former chair of the island GOP who’s been involved in campaigns and community work for decades. She caught flack for saying “Heil Hitler” while comparing the mayor and Gov to nazi dictators. She’s since apologized and is running to protect the NYPD budget3/
And then there’s Vito Fossella, the former island congressman who stepped down amid a second family scandal. He says he can’t just sit on the sidelines and he will help people “get back to basics.” 4/
His plan to run was unexpected and some believe the result of a tired and divided GOP, which has backed Matteo. As one political insider told me recently — many take issue with the idea that he’s been “groomed” by his party as the successor since Oddo became BP. 5/
One told me “you’re not entitled to any political office. This race will remind people of that.” 6/
All of this...and we haven’t even discussed the Democrats, who have a handful of candidates running in the primary as well 7/
