Here's something I figured out which maybe can make me feel less alienated with regards to videogames. Sometimes someone is talking about some really popular game and saying how much they like it, and I'm just like... utterly baffled at how anyone could enjoy that.
The popular games especially, it really can feel like "everyone likes this except you" and therefore "there's something wrong with you". I think for me I feel extra alienated because in game design circles it seems like "the ONLY correct opinion is to like EVERYTHING".
But whatever someone claims, the fact is that there's gonna be some stuff they like, some stuff they LOVE and some stuff they strongly dislike. I think this goes for everyone, and I guess this sounds obvious in one way, but on a day to day basis I don't *feel* that.
I'm also constantly jealous of the people who can just, be excited about a new Pokemon/Diablo/whatever thing that comes out every few years. Like they just have a guaranteed thing they'll enjoy and I really don't, and it feels like the world is "working" for the Pokemon people.
For me I feel near-endless gamelessness, a feeling of WANTING to play a game so badly, but then thinking through all of the existing games and going "nope, nope, definitely not, no way"...
But maybe that's more common than I think. Because we hear more about the "OMG this new game hypehypehype!" stuff; when a new Pokemon comes out all the non-pokemon fans don't post about it saying how much they hate it. So you kinda get a biased view of how much people like stuff.
I don't know if I can land this tweet thread with a nice "therefore statement" conclusion. Thanks for reading! :)
