A thread discussing Toshio Sako’s artistic talent & creativity in making Usogui, and explaining what makes his art more than just detailed.

An aspect which sets Sako apart from others is just how dynamic his art is, & the amount of personality his character illustrations portray.
Starting with my all time favourite illustration of Baku, Sako’s understanding of perspective gives so much depth & personality to his characters. It’s a fun and unique perspective which reflects Baku’s character, he’s exciting and one of a kind, his eyes focused on the readers
gives us the idea that he’s letting us know he’ll come out on top again, and that everything will work out as planned.

On the left Sako uses an above angle to depict Baku while on the right he’s drawn from directly in front. With a focus on his expression, the left really
intensifies his emotions, with the perspective purposely enlarging his shocked eyes, while the right shows him in a more stable and calm state.

Sako’s creativity really heightens during Air Poker, with angles such as on the right, from Baku’s point of view to show us Lalo’s
chilling expression (as viewed by our protagonist). We’re continuously being pulled into the manga, seeing things from the same perspectives as the cast. Illustrating in these extreme angles require so much talent and experience, it’s bold, brave and absolute stunning.
Sako doesn’t shy away from showing us the extreme side of humans, and his range in expressions are great taking. The amount of emotions that can be felt through his art is phenomenal. The expressions are exciting, daunting, terrifying and so full of life it reflects onto readers.
The imagery is like no other, absolutely insane and so breathtaking to look at and experience. Sako’s art is so emotional and full of life that it tells us everything about each character without relying on the text, and every human emotion possible is drawn throughout.
for so long, I wondered what made Toshio Sako’s art so different? What made it so much better then anything I’ve ever experienced? Things like this.A manga that can pull readers into the ugly and the beautiful of every character, a manga that felt so crazy yet so real. Art that
spoke just as much as the actual words. Honestly, there’s like 5 usogui fans out there but in making this thread I truly wanted to get to the bottom of what really set apart Toshio Sako’s creativity and artwork from everything else. This was such a minor scene, but his panelling
was so fun and creativity, every little thing is memorable. A small section of my folder of almost 700 usogui pages, yet you can see how many of these are focused on human expression and portrayal. Sako weaponises his artistic talent and creativity to portray an insane manga
surrounding psychological and physical warefare. Read Usogui everyone.
